Focus ST: Slight chirp on boost

So I noticed something today that may or may not be cause for alarm. In 3rd or 4th, when giving full throttle at low RPMs, there’s a slight chirp sound. I can only hear it with the windows down and the radio off, but it’s there.

Again, no, this isn’t the BPV venting on a shift or when coming off throttle. It may just be hitting max boost and venting the rest, but the BPV makes more of a “pshhh” sound than this, which is definitely sharper and higher-pitched.

Am I just being paranoid? I’ve had two things go wrong with this car this week, and I’m starting to consider if I might have accidentally parked on an indian burial ground or something.

I’d consider getting it checked, especially if it gets worse. It’s hard for anyone to say whether it’s something or nothing without hearing it. I’ve had turbo problems, they fucking suck.

that does sound odd. how many miles does your car have? generally speaking its not good to give full throttle at low rpms. 3rd and 4th might be ok but you shouldn’t be giving full throttle under I would say 2700-3000 rpm as it strains the engine. this is why most advise to downshift to pass on highway and not just lazily floor it. I would go to the dealer and show them otherwise not sure what to tell you

Your problem is your turbo is made of something clear and the air is on fire. Pretty sure sure that’s not how internal combustion engines work.

About 13k. Unfortunately since the car doesn’t make full boost in 1st or 2nd, I can’t be too high in 3rd without risking a ticket. Still, I wasn’t that low. Probably 3500-4000 RPM

On a separate note it is so tempting to just floor it in this car. Most cars really, really struggle at 85mph in top gear at 1.5 miles ASL, but the FoST just pulls and pulls and pulls.

My supercharged Tacoma meanwhile has to downshift to 3rd if it encounters a hill or a particularly level patch.

Sounds like a coil pack is going bad. They chirp. Depending on the type you can see where the electricity arcs through the case. Turning on all the accessories like defrost, ac etc can sometimes provoke it.

Do they only chirp while under boost?

Coolest. Turbo. Illustration. Ever.

Most likely, either as a “look at how cool turbos are” marketing thing from probably some american brand that only just recently figured out how to make turbo engines work, or as a depiction of Antilag.

Antilag: Proving once again that “put some explosions in it” can solve a truly astounding number of problems.

I’ve only heard it when letting off actually. It’s a pretty distinct sound though. Pop the hood and rev it.

Did that just the other day when trying to suss out my AC problems, didn’t hear anything amiss.

So when the engine isn’t under load the chirp won’t happen? Try it with every electrical doodads you can think of on, it might give you enough load to provoke it.

Kinja'd!!! TheOnelectronic > DogonCrook

Kinja'd!!!0

It isn’t an electrical kind of chirping... it sounds almost exactly like compressed air escaping from something.

Actually you're gonna have to rebuild your turbo and replace your exhaust after a few events

Kinja'd!!!0

Maybe that can be solved with some explosions as well. Maybe nobody else has dared to think as radically as that.

What if you replaced the turbo... with more explosions?

Wait, I think that’s what Nitrous is.

Everything can be fixed by dumping fuel into very hot parts of the engine

Coil arcs sound like a weak bird chirp at first, by the time it makes the arcing sound like a stove igniting it’s going to have misfires. If it sounds like compressed gas escaping, it probably is. I’m not really familiar with your car though so I’d head to a forum for your specific car and rule out common issues for that model. It’s going to be really hard to find the source till it gets worse or causes symptoms. You are under warranty I assume so don’t stress it too much. If you are super worried inspect every plug and look for an anomaly, but if it not showing up there, then it’s not a problem really.

For anyone curious; this is not a photoshop. A guy actually installed a jet turbine in his beetle.

Does it sound like this? If so you are fine.

Edit:,the whoop before the bov. The bpv will let some air by while stabbing the throttle from low rpm while the boost builds but it still detects vacuum. May or May not be normal on your car, but shouldn’t damage anything you are just losing power.

If it gets worse...

99% of warranty claims / customer concerns at my old job was “i heard a noise”

Almost never able to duplicate.

All we could do was notate and wait for it to get worse. Welcome to ford warranty claim service.

That could be it. A partial opening giving more of a chirp than the woosh of the full release.

WRONG but STILL COOL . . . ? Only for not technically inclined, perhaps. For it’s EXACTLY the same as if the intake would be drawn through the exhaust pipe and exhaust coming through the intake tract, no less.

Guess, those who know, know. Those who don’t know, it does not matter anyway.

It is called willing suspension of disbelief. It allows you to watch Fast and Furious without vomiting or sobbing like a 6 year old that can’t have his lollipop. This picture has all kinds of wrong about a turbo, still pretty. Picture an actual turbo made transparent, being the exhaust side, and thats what you would see... for 0.00003 seconds before that plastic melts or explodes.

... being the exhaust side, and thats what you would see ...

Well, the point is, it’s NOT the exhaust side. For the ‘fire’ in that illustration, however pretty, is in the INTAKE side. Makes sense only for those who know absolutely nothing about the mechanics of a turbocharger, I guess. So, it does not matter anyway...
